Exploring Hidden Gems—One Trail at a Time
It’s been a little while since I’ve posted here on Wander With Me, but only because I’ve been out wandering. My most recent adventures took me and my dog into Kentucky’s Appalachian foothills for two memorable outings—one to Red River Gorge, and a separate trail day to Dog Slaughter Falls.
Though Cumberland Falls wasn’t part of this trip, it’s still one of the best dog-friendly destinations in the region. If you’re looking to build a trail itinerary, check out my Cumberland Falls blog post for a full recap and photos.
Dog Slaughter Falls – A Beautiful Hike with a Few Surprises

The trail to Dog Slaughter Falls was peaceful and scenic, tucked deep into the forest with a steady creek running alongside the path. However, it wasn’t without challenges:
- The bridge is currently out on the shorter route
- The longer trail, while passable, included downed trees, muddy slopes, and steep, narrow riverbank edges
- Despite following the well-worn path, I didn’t reach the waterfall
It’s worth noting that other hikers may have found the falls successfully using alternate cues or distances I may have missed. After discussing it with Kayla at Sheltowee Trace Adventure Resort, even she confirmed the trail’s clarity—suggesting I may have turned back just shy of the destination. Regardless, I chose to prioritize safety and my dog’s limits.
We only caught a light sprinkle before heading back, narrowly avoiding the heavy rain that hit later that day.
Red River Gorge – Sky Bridge Views Worth Every Step

A prior weekend, I visited Sky Bridge Trail in Red River Gorge—a shorter hike with a dramatic payoff: panoramic forest views from a natural stone arch. However, the trail includes multiple steep metal staircases. While fine for humans, the surface was painful on my dog’s paws, and I ended up carrying him up the final steep flights.
Plan ahead if your dog is sensitive to stairs or terrain changes. Bringing dog booties or a towel may help.
Trail Safety & Conditions: Know Before You Go
Each of these trips came with real reminders about backcountry safety. Here are some essentials I recommend:
- Download offline maps in advance (I use AllTrails Pro and Gaia GPS)
- Bring a printed trail reference—cell service is unreliable
- Tell someone where you’re going and your ETA
- Carry water, a whistle, flashlight, and first-aid kit
- Know your dog’s physical limits and don’t push through uncertain terrain
And importantly: Check yourself and your dog for ticks after any wooded hike. Ticks can hide in brush, tall grass, and near waterways. Use a reliable flea and tick prevention product, and consult your vet based on your dog’s size, breed, and activity level. They’ll help you choose something effective and safe for your specific travel needs.
Budget-Friendly Tips for Dog Travel (Not a One-Size-Fits-All)
While everyone’s adventure budget looks different, here are a few cost-conscious choices that worked well for me:
- Pre-packed meals helped me save money and avoid dog-unfriendly restaurants
- Free or low-cost trails (like those in state forests) offered beautiful scenery without the cost of national park access
- Apps like GasBuddy and Upside help me find affordable
Of course, not all public trails offer the same views as national parks—but for casual explorers like me, they often strike the right balance between accessibility, cost, and natural beauty.
Travel Isn’t Just a Passion—It’s My Lifestyle
These journeys reflect a larger shift I’m working toward: building a life where travel isn’t just a break from routine—it is the routine. I’m stepping into the world of home-based travel advising and remote travel marketing, helping others discover experiences like these (and save while doing it).
