A solo Lake Huron getaway that didn’t go as planned, but still felt exactly right
Some weekends come together exactly how you picture them.
This one didn’t.
And I didn’t really mind.
The Lighthouse That Was Closed Anyway

Getting to the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse should have been simple. Google Maps had other plans and tried to send me straight across the border before I caught it and rerouted.
I made it there and it was closed.
I still walked up and took it in for a minute. The air coming off the lake felt fresh, everything was quiet, and there wasn’t much going on around me. It didn’t feel like a wasted stop. Just a quiet one.
If you go, it’s probably worth checking hours ahead of time. But even from the outside, it’s still worth seeing.
A Simple Food Stop That Worked
After that, I stopped at Pepper Joe’s and ordered a “fake” Monte Cristo and coconut perch.
Not something I would normally pair together, but both ended up being solid. Nothing over the top, just a good meal after being on the road for a while.
That’s usually enough for me when I’m traveling.
Slowing Down at the St. Clair Inn
The St. Clair Inn was where everything shifted.
I checked in, got settled, and spent most of my time just enjoying the room and the view. My balcony sat right along the water, and I ended up watching barges pass by for a while, just sitting out there with nothing else to do.
Later on, I realized I could see them just as clearly from inside, so I stretched out on the bed and kept watching from there too.
At some point, I found out there’s an app that tells you exactly which ships are passing.

The next morning, I woke up in time to catch the sunrise from bed. No alarms, no rush. Just watching the light come up over the water without needing to go anywhere.

That alone made the stay worth it.
Sometimes when I’m thinking about trips like this, I’ll scroll through my travel site just to see what places stand out or feel like they’d be worth bookmarking for later:

A Slow Morning and a Good Reset
I actually slept in, which doesn’t happen often.
I didn’t rush the morning. I just let it start on its own, took my time getting ready, and enjoyed the quiet before heading out.

Later, I met a friend for brunch at Poco Piatti. Good food, easy conversation, nothing forced. It felt like a natural extension of the weekend instead of something scheduled.
A Stop on the Way Home
On my way home after that, I stopped at Johnson Fruit Farm. She had suggested it, and since I was already heading that direction, it made sense to stop.
I grabbed some apple cider and fresh donuts, and honestly, it was one of those simple stops that ends up being worth it.
A Night Out I Hadn’t Done in a While

Later that day, I met up with some friends for line dancing.
It had been a while since I’d done that, but I remembered most of the steps and didn’t completely lose my place during Turbo Twang or Walkin’ Wazi, so I’m calling that a win.
It felt good to just show up, have fun with it, and not overthink anything.
The Drive Home Reminder
On the way home after line dancing, a deer ran out in front of my car.
Close enough that I heard it more than saw it.
No damage, no impact, and she was gone just as quickly as she appeared. Still, it’s one of those moments that sticks with you for a bit and reminds you to stay alert, especially on those darker backroads.
If you do a lot of driving like this, apps like GasBuddy or Upside can be helpful for planning stops without much effort.
What This Weekend Actually Gave Me
Nothing about this trip was perfectly planned.
The lighthouse was closed.
The directions didn’t cooperate.
There wasn’t much of an itinerary.
But that space made room for everything else.
It reminded me a lot of something I shared before in Not every trip needs to be big or structured to feel worth it. Sometimes it’s just about showing up and letting things unfold as they will.
That’s also part of why I’ve found the idea of building travel into everyday life interesting. Some people keep it occasional, some make it part of their routine, and some explore becoming a travel agent or travel marketing rep as a way to stay connected to it more consistently. If that’s something you’ve ever been curious about, feel free to reach out or ask. No pressure.
If I Went Back
If I come back to this area, I’d probably:
- Check lighthouse hours ahead of time
- Spend more time along the water
- Look into a few more local stops nearby
- Keep the schedule just as open
Have you ever had a trip that didn’t go to plan but still ended up being exactly what you needed?
Final Thoughts
This wasn’t a packed weekend. It wasn’t perfectly planned.
But it was calm, simple, and easy to be present in.
And that ended up being enough.
If you’ve had a weekend like that recently, I’d love to hear about it.
Until next time, wander a little slower with me.
