A Quick Florida Weekend Getaway (Plus a Surprise Flight Detour on the Way Home)

Redeyes into sunshine, fun time with family, a random Florida cold snap that felt like fall, and a travel day that refused to end normally.

A couple weeks ago, I did what I always do when I want to stretch a weekend: I went into “maximize every second” mode.

It started with a mini sleepover to finish our Ziva + Tony marathon (if you know, you know 🥹). Then I caught the redeye so I could squeeze every possible hour out of a quick Florida trip. I landed a little tired, a lot excited, and fully ready to trade layers for sunshine.

And Florida delivered.

Fun times with family (and some bonus friend time too)

This trip wasn’t about packing in a million tourist stops. It was just genuinely fun time with my family, plus getting to hang out with some of their friends too. The kind of weekend where you’re not trying to “make” it special… it just is.

Beach time with my fam. Sunshine. Laughing a lot. And that relaxed Florida pace that makes you forget what day it is for a second.

Ford’s Garage

We did dinner at Ford’s Garage and it was a solid 10/10 like always. If you’ve been, you already get it.

Yes, I posed with the truck. Obviously.

Church, brunch, and watching cruise ships roll in and out

One of my favorite parts of the weekend was church, then brunch/lunch by the port. We sat there watching the cruise ships roll in and out, which is weirdly calming. Something about it just hits. People coming, people going, giant ships moving like it’s no big deal… meanwhile I’m sitting there thinking, “How is that real life?”

Port views and a good Florida breeze.
Something about watching the ships never gets old

Galentine’s + a movie, then a Valentine’s Day dance

I did a Galentine’s dinner and a movie with some friends, and Saturday night (Valentine’s Day) we went to the Valentine’s Day dance. Simple, fun, and honestly the perfect kind of weekend energy.

Key lime pie, and Sweetie the alligator (because Florida)

Key lime pie absolutely did not disappoint. And while I was there getting it… Sweetie the alligator was also there.

Which feels like the most Florida sentence ever. Like, “Yep, I went to get dessert and also there was an alligator.” Totally normal. Apparently.

Florida-core moment, confirmed

Unexpected surprise: Florida had a cold snap and it felt like fall

Here’s the twist I wasn’t expecting. Florida had a cold snap while I was there, and it legit felt like a little slice of fall. Cooler air, fall-looking foliage, and that moment where you’re like… why am I in a jacket in Florida?

Not mad about it though. It was actually pretty.

Jacket weather in Florida was not on my bingo card

Bonus: I got to watch a rocket launch

And because Florida loves to keep things interesting, I also got to watch a rocket launch. Seeing that in real life is one of those moments that makes you feel tiny and amazed at the same time. It’s hard to explain, but it’s one of those “okay wow” experiences that sticks with you.

Then came the trip home… and it turned into an adventure

And then it was time to head back.

After midnight, we circled the airport more times than I could count before getting diverted to Detroit. Not how anyone plans to end a trip, but honestly it could’ve been way worse. A hotel, food, and everything comped later, we finally got some rest and made it home the next day.

Still… going from sunshine to airport chaos is a special kind of whiplash.

If you’ve ever had a trip end with a curveball, you might relate to my “detours happen” energy in this one too:

Back to layers (dramatically)

Cue the slow, slightly dramatic transition back to cold-weather clothing. You know the one. The mental shift from sandals to layers like it’s a personality change.

Short trip. Full heart, Grateful all around.

Good food. Great weather. Fun times with family and friends. Beach time. Cruise ships. A surprise Florida fall moment. A rocket launch. And grace when plans change.

And if you ever like browsing travel ideas on your own (even just for fun), my travel booking site is always there too.

Also, quick side note since travel is clearly a regular part of my life: some people keep travel as an occasional treat, some people build it into their rhythm, and some people even become a Travel Agent or Travel Marketing Rep alongside their normal life because they love being connected to travel in a more consistent way. If that idea has ever crossed your mind, I’m always happy to chat, no pressure, just real conversation.

So tell me, have you ever had a travel day go sideways at the very end? And what’s your favorite “small moment” from a trip that ended up being the one you remember most?

Until next time, wander with me.
