Washington Park, Over-the-Rhine, and a speakeasy nightcap (with a nonalcoholic twist)
Some days don’t need a big plan. They just need a city you like, a little curiosity, and enough time to wander without rushing.
That was my Cincinnati day.
I took the Underground Tour, but I built a whole slow afternoon around it. I got there early and let the waiting part become part of the day instead of something to “get through.”
A slow start at Washington Park

Before the tour, I spent time walking around Washington Park. It’s one of those places that feels like a natural reset button, even if you’re only there for a little while. I kept it simple: strolling, people-watching, and letting Cincinnati feel like Cincinnati.
If you’re visiting and you have time to spare, this is a good place to start. It’s easy, central, and it puts you right in the middle of a neighborhood that rewards wandering.
Wandering Over-the-Rhine before the tour

After the park, I headed into Over-the-Rhine and just explored.
OTR feels like layers. Pretty buildings, little corners that make you slow down, busy streets, quiet side streets, and that sense that the neighborhood has been a lot of things over the years. Even if you don’t have a strict itinerary, it’s a great place to walk around and see what you stumble into.
If you’re the kind of traveler who likes a “walk first, decide later” approach, this area makes that easy.
The Underground Tour: cool, creepy, and worth it

Then it was time for the Underground Tour.
It was very cool, and yes, a little creepy in the way underground spaces tend to be. Not in a scary way, just in that chills-on-your-arms way when you realize how much history is literally under your feet.
What I loved most was getting a glimpse of Cincinnati’s hidden history. It’s the kind of experience that makes you look at a city differently afterward. You come back up to street level and realize you’ve been walking over stories all day without even knowing it.
If you like history, local lore, or anything that feels slightly off the beaten path, this was absolutely worth it.
If you ever want to browse tours and experiences like this in other cities too, I usually start by looking around on Viator to compare options and times.
Ending the day at Ghost Baby (and the nonalcoholic speakeasy debate)

I wrapped up my Cincinnati time at Ghost Baby, sipping nonalcoholic drinks in a speakeasy.
Still debating if that’s an oxymoron.
Either way, it was a fun way to close out the day, and it fit the vibe after spending time learning about what’s hidden underground. Sometimes you just want a place that feels a little different than your usual “grab a drink and head home” stop.
A few practical notes if you’re planning a similar day
If you want to build a Cincinnati day like this, here’s what I’d do again:
- Arrive early so you can wander without feeling squeezed by the tour time.
- Use Washington Park as your buffer. It’s an easy place to slow down before you head into OTR.
- Wear comfortable shoes. Even a “casual” OTR wander adds up fast.
- Leave a little space after the tour. I liked having time to sit, process it, and not immediately jump to the next thing.
What should I do next time in Cincinnati?
Next time I’m in the city, I want to keep leaning into the history and neighborhood exploring. I’m also curious what other walking tours or museum stops locals recommend, especially the kind that teach you something without feeling like you’re back in school.
If you’ve done the Underground Tour, did you love it or did it creep you out a little? And what’s your favorite place to wander in OTR?
A quick Wander With Me note
Days like this are part of why I love travel. You can keep it simple, stay curious, and still end up with a day that feels full.
It’s also why the “travel as a lifestyle” path makes sense to me. Some people travel just for fun, some people love helping others plan, and some people end up becoming a Travel Agent or Travel Marketing Rep because they enjoy building something around the way they already live. If that idea has ever crossed your mind, I’m always happy to chat about what it actually looks like.
And if you’re the type who likes browsing travel ideas on your own, my travel site is always there too.

Thanks for wandering Cincinnati with me today. Tell me what you’d add to this day, or what city I should do next.
Until next time, wander with me.
